There is something irresistible about a Cavapoo. Maybe it is those big, round eyes that seem to look straight into your soul. Maybe it is the way they tilt their head when you talk to them, as if they are genuinely trying to understand every word. At Blue Diamond Cavapoos, we have had the privilege of watching families fall completely in love with these dogs, and truthfully, we fall in love with them all over again with each new litter.
The internet is full of articles describing Cavapoos as sweet, friendly, and great with families. All of that is true. But what makes a Cavapoo truly special goes much deeper, and understanding that difference can help you decide if this breed is the right fit for your life.
More Than Just a Pretty Face
The Cavapoo breed brings together two breeds with extraordinary qualities. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is very popular for its gentle, affectionate nature and its deep desire to be close to its people. The Toy Poodle contributes intelligence, a hypoallergenic coat, and a playful spirit that keeps life interesting. When these two breeds combine, you get a dog that is both a devoted companion and a clever, engaging friend.
At Blue Diamond Cavapoos, we describe our dogs as having sweet, calm, and loving temperaments with medium energy levels. They are not the type of dog that will run you ragged with demands for activity, but they are also not couch potatoes who want to sleep all day. They find that perfect balance; they are happy to join you for a walk around the neighborhood or curl up beside you while you read a book. This adaptability makes them wonderful companions for people in many different life stages and living situations.
What we hear most often from families who have adopted our Cavapoos is how intuitive these dogs are. They seem to sense when you need comfort and when you are ready to play. They bond deeply with their family and genuinely want to be near you. This is not a dog that will be content living outside or being left alone for long stretches. Cavapoos thrive on family connections, and they will repay your attention with loyalty and affection.
Choosing the Right Generation for Your Family
When shopping for a Cavapoo, you’ll encounter breeder terms like F1 and F1b. These indicate your puppy’s genetic makeup, affecting coat type, shedding, and allergy concerns. At Blue Diamond Cavapoos, we offer both generations because different families have different priorities. Here is what you need to know to make your choice.
The F1 Cavapoo is your first-generation cross. Mom is a purebred Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and Dad is a purebred Miniature or Toy Poodle. This creates a puppy that is 50% Cavalier and 50% Poodle. F1 Cavapoos typically develop a wavy coat that sheds minimally and is considered semi-hypoallergenic. If you love the look of a softer, wavier coat and do not have severe allergies, the F1 generation might be exactly what you are looking for. These dogs are also a bit easier to groom. They need regular brushing to prevent tangles, but you can generally wait 12 to 14 weeks between professional grooming appointments.
The F1b Cavapoo is a second-generation cross that pairs an F1 Cavapoo mom with a purebred Miniature or Toy Poodle dad. This produces puppies that are 25% Cavalier and 75% Poodle. The higher Poodle percentage means F1b Cavapoos typically have curlier coats that shed little to none, which makes them hypoallergenic and an excellent choice for families with allergy concerns. The issue is that their curly coat requires more attention because it can be more challenging to brush due to the tighter curl pattern, so they should be professionally groomed every 6 to 8 weeks to keep their curly coat healthy and manageable. Some families also notice that F1b Cavapoos have a bit more energy thanks to that extra Poodle influence.
Both generations share the wonderful Cavapoo temperament, so your choice really comes down to coat preference, allergy considerations, and how much grooming you are prepared to handle. Our team is always happy to discuss these differences and help you determine which generation best fits your lifestyle.
A Rainbow of Colors and the Truth About Shedding
One of the wonderful things about Cavapoos is the variety of colors they come in because both Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Poodles exhibit very diverse coat colors. Like, Blenheim (with its distinctive red and white markings), solid ruby reds, elegant black-and-tan combinations, striking tri-colors featuring black, white, and tan, or solid shades of black, white, apricot, silver, or brown. Some puppies even sport unique patterns that blend multiple colors together.
Coat texture varies as well, depending on which parent a puppy takes after more strongly. Some Cavapoos develop tight, spiral curls that closely resemble the Poodle coat. Others have softer, looser waves that feel silky to the touch. Both coat types can be absolutely gorgeous when properly maintained. Curly coats tend to trap loose hair and dander, which is why they shed less and work better for allergy sufferers. Wavy coats may release a bit more hair, but are often easier to brush and maintain between grooming appointments.
While Cavapoos are generally considered a hypoallergenic breed because they shed very little and produce less dander than many other dogs, no breed is considered entirely hypoallergenic. Some sensitive individuals may still experience reactions. If allergies are a serious concern in your household, we always recommend spending time with a Cavapoo before committing. The F1b generation offers your best chance at minimal allergic response, but individual results can vary.
How We Raise Exceptional Cavapoos
Choosing a breeder is one of the most important decisions you will make when adding a puppy to your family. The difference between a well-bred puppy and one from a careless breeder can mean the difference between years of joy and years of health struggles. At Blue Diamond Cavapoos, all of our parent dogs are genetically health tested to ensure we are pairing dogs that will produce the healthiest possible offspring. This commitment to health testing is not negotiable for us. It is the foundation of responsible breeding.
Beyond genetic testing, we do something that separates us from many other breeders. Every single Blue Diamond Cavapoo puppy undergoes Early Neurological Stimulation, also known as ENS. This is a protocol that many breeders skip because it requires daily dedication during a very specific window of development. We perform ENS exercises from day three through day sixteen of each puppy’s life. These gentle exercises help desensitize puppies to human touch and various environmental stimuli during a critical period of neurological growth.
Why does ENS matter so much? Research has demonstrated that puppies who receive Early Neurological Stimulation develop stronger cardiovascular systems, better stress tolerance, and improved adrenal function. They tend to be more confident, more resilient, and better equipped to handle the surprises life throws at them. When our families tell us their Blue Diamond puppy adjusted to their new home beautifully, we know that ENS played a significant role in that smooth transition.
We also have every puppy temperament tested by our professional puppy trainer, Kimberly. She evaluates each puppy individually and writes personalized descriptions based on each puppy’s unique personality. This is not a one-size-fits-all approach. We believe every puppy deserves to be seen as an individual, and every family deserves to find a puppy whose temperament matches their lifestyle and expectations.
Bringing Home A Cavapoo
The Cavapoos’ compact size is typically 12 to 20 pounds and 9 to 12 inches tall, making them ideal for most living situations, including apartments and larger homes. What matters most to them is being with the people they love, not the size of their living space. Cavapoos are a great choice for first-time dog owners because they are intelligent and very eager to please. Training is also an enjoyable experience because they respond well to positive reinforcement. Keep those treats handy and offer plenty of praise when they get it right. Potty training tends to go smoothly and quickly with consistent effort.
The Exercise needs for Cavapoos are very basic; a daily walk combined with some playtime is usually enough to keep a Cavapoo happy and healthy. Puzzle toys, training sessions, and interactive games can help keep their clever minds engaged. Cavapoos also tend to be quiet dogs, not prone to excessive barking, making them excellent neighbors in apartments or close-knit living situations.
Families with children will find Cavapoos to be patient and gentle playmates who get along wonderfully with kids of all ages. They typically do well with other pets in the household. Their calm demeanor and intelligence also make them excellent candidates for therapy dog work. With a life expectancy of 11 to 16 years, a Cavapoo will be by your side through many chapters of life, offering unconditional love and companionship along the way.
